General Introduction to uPVC Groove Beads and uPVC Groove Beads for Plastering and Rendering
uPVC groove beads are engineering-grade uPVC profiles used to create recessed grooves and decorative shadow lines on wall surfaces, columns and ceilings. They form neat grooves directly within the plaster or render layer without requiring the grooves to be cut afterwards or the surface to be plastered in two separate stages, as is often necessary with conventional methods. The profiles are commonly designed with a U-shaped or V-shaped cross-section and are fixed securely within the plaster, render, putty or skim-coat layer on masonry walls, plasterboard partitions and ceilings.
uPVC groove beads for plastering and rendering are specifically designed for masonry wall applications with plaster or render layers ranging from approximately 5 mm to 20 mm in thickness. They are especially effective when multiple straight, parallel recessed grooves are required across a plastered or rendered surface.

Introduction to PVC, uPVC and Engineering-Grade uPVC
HAN uPVC groove beads are manufactured from uPVC, also known as PVC-U. The full name of uPVC is unplasticized polyvinyl chloride. It is a rigid form of PVC that does not contain plasticizers. Its rigidity gives uPVC enhanced mechanical, physical and chemical properties compared with conventional flexible PVC.
HAN engineering-grade uPVC is researched and developed from a uPVC base formulation, with its mechanical, physical and chemical characteristics adjusted to suit different construction applications.
Using engineering-grade uPVC improves the bead's rigidity, toughness, elasticity, surface gloss, colour stability and chemical resistance, making it suitable for technical plastering and rendering requirements.
HAN uPVC groove beads are safe for installers and building occupants when used as intended.
Under normal outdoor temperature and environmental conditions, the service life of the uPVC groove bead is compatible with that of the surrounding plaster or render layer.

How to Select and Use uPVC Groove Beads for Optimal Technical and Economic Performance
To achieve the best technical and economic performance when using HAN uPVC groove beads, customers should consider the following:
| No. | Item | Recommended | Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Product code | If the construction specification has already been established, confirm the exact HAN product code before placing an order. | |
| 2 | Profile design | For indoor areas with limited dust exposure, a U-shaped groove bead is generally suitable. For outdoor applications, a V-shaped groove bead should be prioritized because it is easier to drain and clean. | Do not select a lower-cost profile without considering installation conditions, service requirements and appearance. |
| 3 | Size | Consider the intended visual effect when selecting the groove width and depth. | |
| 4 | Length | For small quantities, use HAN's standard lengths of 2 m, 2.5 m or 3 m. For large projects, custom-cut lengths can reduce offcuts and unnecessary costs. | Avoid ordering unsuitable lengths that create excessive waste and increase installation costs. |
| 5 | Quantity | Confirm the required quantity and lengths, and include an appropriate allowance for cutting and installation waste. | |
| 6 | Ordering schedule | Ensure that the products are available in the site warehouse before installation begins so that the construction schedule is not affected. | Avoid placing orders too close to the scheduled installation date. |
| 7 | Identifying genuine HAN products | Purchase through an authorized distributor or directly from HAN. The packaging should clearly display HAN information, including the product code, address and telephone number. | Products supplied in packaging that does not clearly show HAN factory information may not be genuine HAN products. |
| 8 | Responsible personnel | Personnel with suitable knowledge and experience should consult directly with HAN's technical team before a purchasing decision is made. | |
| 9 | Installation method | Follow HAN's installation instructions: fully pack the bead with mortar, provide a suitable plaster thickness, and secure the profile firmly at the correct level and alignment. For products supplied with temporary protective film, determine the correct removal time to preserve the finished surface. | |
| 10 | Storage | Follow HAN's transportation and storage recommendations to maintain product quality before installation. |

To obtain the best finished quality, remove the temporary protective film at the appropriate time—after installation, cleaning and all related finishing work have been completed. This helps protect the bead surface until the area is ready to be put into service.
Correct Transportation and Storage of HAN uPVC Finishing Beads
Transportation precautions:
- Do not drag cartons across the ground or throw them down from a height.
- Do not leave cartons standing vertically or leaning for extended periods.
- Use a truck with a flat loading deck and a covered body or tarpaulin to protect the products from rain.
- When transporting different bead types on the same vehicle, place longer and heavier cartons underneath shorter and lighter cartons.
- Do not place heavy or sharp objects on the cartons. Prevent the packaging from bending, warping or being punctured during transportation.
- Handle cartons correctly during loading and unloading to prevent tearing, bending or other damage.
Storage precautions:
- Store indoors on pallets in a dry, cool and well-ventilated area. Protect the products from direct sunlight, water, soil, mud, dampness, mould and high temperatures.
- Do not store cartons vertically. Individual beads should not be left standing or leaning for extended periods because they may bend.
- When products are not in use, clean them and return them to their cartons. Proper packaging prevents dust accumulation and helps preserve the colour, smoothness and gloss of the surface.
- Do not turn cartons upside down. Keep them in the orientation indicated by the directional arrows on the packaging.

When installing HAN uPVC Groove Beads for plastering and rendering, customers should observe the following guidelines:
- Select the appropriate groove bead profile for the application, such as a U-shaped or V-shaped profile, and ensure it is suitable for the required plaster thickness.
- Clean the substrate thoroughly and keep all areas to be plastered clear and accessible.
- Prepare suitable setting-out and levelling tools. A laser level can help accelerate installation by simultaneously aligning multiple vertical and horizontal lines within the same area.
- Establish accurate reference lines by fixing nails and stretching string lines to position the bead. The bead surface may also be used as a reference guide for the finished plaster level.
- Use suitable hand-cutting tools, such as a utility knife, scissors, pliers or a specialized bead-cutting machine, to achieve quick and clean cuts.
- A specialized cutting machine is recommended for smooth, precise joints, particularly at 90° intersections.
- Securely fix the bead using nails, screws, adhesive mortar or cement mortar. Use only adhesive mortar with good bonding strength to accelerate installation. Do not drive nails or screws through the exposed face of the bead.
- Fully bed the bead in mortar along its entire length. Avoid spot fixing, as this may leave hollow areas and reduce stability after plastering.
- Plastering may normally begin 24 hours after installation, or once the bead has been firmly secured.
- Adjust the plaster level according to the subsequent finishing work. The plaster surface is normally kept 1–2 mm below the top edge of the bead when puttying and painting will follow. Otherwise, the bead edge may be finished flush with the plaster surface.
- Cure and maintain the plaster layer in accordance with applicable standards.
- Store unused beads properly in accordance with HAN’s storage instructions.
