General Introduction to uPVC Groove Beads and uPVC Groove Beads for Skim-Coat Finishes
uPVC groove beads are technical uPVC profiles designed to form recessed grooves and decorative shadow lines on wall surfaces and within the plastered or rendered finishes of walls, columns and ceilings. They eliminate the need to cut grooves or apply two separate plaster coats as required by conventional methods. Commonly available in U-shaped and V-shaped profiles, uPVC groove beads are fixed securely within the finishing layer and are suitable for plastering, rendering, putty finishing, plasterboard partitions and ceilings.
uPVC groove beads for skim-coat finishes are specifically designed for plasterboard walls, panel walls and other surfaces with thin finishing coats ranging from 1 mm to 3 mm. They are particularly effective when multiple straight, parallel recessed grooves are required.
uPVC groove beads for skim-coat finishes also help reduce cracking caused by material shrinkage at joints and transitions.

To achieve the best technical and economic performance when using uPVC groove beads for skim-coat finishes, customers should consider the following:
| No. | Item | Points to Consider | What to Avoid |
| 1 | Product code | Identify the correct HAN product code when the project specification has already been determined. | |
| 2 | Design | Use PDJ0120 for skim-coat, putty and paint finishes on plasterboard ceilings and walls. Use PDJ0030 for wallpaper finishing applications. | Do not select a lower-cost design without considering installation requirements, service conditions and appearance. |
| 3 | Size | Consider both appearance and functional requirements when selecting the size. | |
| 4 | Length | For small quantities, use HAN’s standard lengths of 2 m, 2.5 m or 3 m. For large projects, custom-cut lengths can help reduce waste and costs. | Avoid ordering unsuitable lengths that create excessive offcuts, waste and additional installation costs. |
| 5 | Quantity | Determine the required quantity and specifications accurately, and allow for a reasonable installation waste factor. | |
| 6 | Ordering time | Ensure the products are available in the site warehouse before installation begins so that construction progress is not affected. | Avoid ordering too close to the installation date, as this may delay the work. |
| 7 | HAN brand identification | Purchase from an authorized distributor or directly from HAN. Genuine packaging should clearly display HAN’s product code, address and telephone number. | Packaging that does not clearly display HAN factory information may not contain genuine HAN products. |
| 8 | Responsible personnel | Personnel with suitable knowledge and experience should work directly with HAN’s technical consultants when making purchasing decisions. | |
| 9 | Installation | Follow HAN’s installation instructions, including fully bedding the bead in finishing compound, applying the correct coat thickness, and fixing the bead securely at the specified level. For products supplied with temporary protective film, remove the film at the appropriate stage to preserve surface quality. | |
| 10 | Storage | Follow the recommended transport and storage instructions to maintain product quality before installation. |
Correct Transport and Storage of HAN uPVC Finishing Beads
Transport recommendations for HAN uPVC finishing beads:
- Do not drag cartons across the ground or throw them down from a height.
- Do not leave cartons tilted or standing upright for extended periods.
- Use a truck with a flat load bed and an enclosed body or waterproof cover to protect the products from rain.
- When transporting different types of beads in the same vehicle, place longer and heavier cartons underneath shorter and lighter cartons.
- Do not place heavy or sharp objects on the cartons. Prevent cartons from bending, warping or being punctured during transport.
- Handle cartons carefully during loading and unloading to prevent tearing, bending or deformation.
Storage recommendations for HAN uPVC finishing beads:
- Store indoors on pallets in a dry, well-ventilated area. Protect the products from direct sunlight, water, soil, mud, moisture, mould and high temperatures.

In ceiling and wall finishing works involving gypsum boards or panels, skim coating and the application of putty or finishing compound are extremely important. Proper surface preparation directly affects the overall quality and appearance of the completed ceiling and wall systems.
Correct application of putty or skim-coat finishing compound not only improves the surface quality of gypsum-board and panel systems but also creates a smooth, consistent substrate for subsequent decorative finishes, such as painting or wallpaper installation.
The finishing layer helps protect the underlying boards and panels, improves surface cohesion and gives the completed ceiling or wall a cleaner and more refined appearance.
Large ceiling and wall surfaces can be difficult to finish evenly and are more susceptible to cracking at board joints due to material shrinkage or movement. In these cases, recessed grooves can be used to divide large surfaces into smaller sections, making installation easier and helping reduce cracking at junctions and board joints.
The PDJ0120 uPVC Groove Bead creates refined recessed lines that serve as architectural accents, improve the appearance of skim-coated surfaces and provide greater flexibility for different interior design styles.
The PDJ0030 uPVC Groove Bead creates a neat termination or joint line for wallpaper, helping minimize installation errors where two wallpaper sections meet.
When recessed grooves are formed manually, workers may spend considerable time, labour and cost achieving straight, even and consistent lines. Creating multiple parallel grooves or very narrow grooves is especially difficult using conventional methods.
HAN uPVC Groove Beads make it easier to create one or multiple parallel recessed grooves with straight, even and consistent dimensions. Both narrow and wide grooves can be formed quickly and accurately.
HAN uPVC Groove Beads for skim-coat finishes may be used in the following applications:
- Puttying and skim coating gypsum-board ceilings and walls.
- Puttying gypsum-board ceilings and walls that will subsequently be finished with wallpaper.
- Forming decorative recessed grooves on skim-coated gypsum-board or panel surfaces.
- Creating neat termination and joint lines between adjacent wallpaper sections.
- Dividing large ceiling and wall surfaces into smaller sections to help control cracking at board joints.
To use HAN uPVC Groove Beads correctly with skim-coat finishes, customers should observe the following guidelines:
- Select the appropriate groove bead profile for the application: PDJ0120 for decorative recessed grooves and PDJ0030 for wallpaper finishing and termination details.
- Select gypsum boards with a thickness greater than the height of the bead to facilitate installation.
- Install the framing system and gypsum boards securely, ensuring that the ceiling and wall surfaces are straight, flat and stable.
- Thoroughly clean the installation area and keep all surfaces to be finished clear and accessible.
- Prepare suitable setting-out and levelling tools. A laser level can accelerate installation by simultaneously aligning multiple vertical and horizontal lines within the same area.
- Use a specialized cutting tool to produce clean, accurate joints, particularly at 90° intersections.
- Secure the bead to the gypsum-board framing with screws, and fasten it to the gypsum board with staples. Do not drive nails, screws or staples into the recessed groove, as this may affect the finished appearance.
- Puttying or skim coating may normally begin 24 hours after the bead is installed, or once it has been firmly secured.
- Ensure that the putty or skim-coat surface is flat and properly covers the bead flanges up to the top reference edge without filling the recessed groove.
- Cure and maintain the putty or skim-coat layer in accordance with applicable standards.
- Once a smooth, even finishing layer has been completed, proceed with subsequent finishes such as painting or wallpaper installation.
- Store unused beads properly in accordance with HAN’s storage instructions.
