General Introduction to Drip Beads and uPVC Drip Beads
Finishing beads are construction accessories designed to make finishing works faster, more accurate and visually refined while reducing installation errors. They can be manufactured from various materials, including galvanized steel, stainless steel, uPVC and aluminium.
uPVC finishing beads are engineered uPVC profiles available in various designs for building finishing works, including plastering, rendering, tiling and skim-coat application.
Drip beads are manufactured from materials such as stainless steel, uPVC or aluminium. They are used in plastering and rendering to form rainwater drip grooves beneath balconies, gutters, canopies, loggias and lintels.
uPVC Drip Beads are manufactured from engineered uPVC with a purpose-designed profile that forms both an accurate drip groove and a straight finishing edge. Installed at the termination edges beneath balconies, gutters, canopies, lintels and loggias, they create a straight, uniform and visually refined groove that helps rainwater drip away quickly.
uPVC Drip Beads may also be known as water-stop beads, drip trims, water-drip trims, rainwater drip profiles, balcony drip beads or similar regional names. Although these terms may not fully describe the features and quality of HAN uPVC Drip Beads, they are commonly used by some customers, engineers and contractors.

General Introduction to PVC, uPVC and Engineered uPVC
uPVC Drip Beads are manufactured from uPVC, also known as PVC-U. The full name of uPVC is “Unplasticized Polyvinyl Chloride”. It is a rigid form of PVC that contains no plasticizers. This rigidity gives uPVC enhanced mechanical, physical and chemical properties compared with conventional flexible PVC.
HAN develops engineered uPVC from a uPVC base formulation and adds specific mechanical, physical and chemical performance characteristics to suit different construction applications.
HAN uPVC Drip Beads are made from engineered uPVC to provide enhanced rigidity, toughness, elasticity, surface gloss, colour stability and chemical resistance, making them suitable for interior and exterior plastering and rendering applications.
HAN uPVC Drip Beads are safe for installers and building users when used as intended. Their surfaces resist moss accumulation and are easy to clean.
The service life of HAN uPVC Drip Beads is compatible with that of plastered and rendered finishes under normal ambient and climatic conditions.

Correct Transport and Storage of HAN uPVC Finishing Beads
Transport recommendations for HAN uPVC Finishing Beads:
- Do not drag cartons along the ground or throw them from a height.
- Do not leave cartons standing vertically or leaning for extended periods.
- Use a vehicle with a flat loading platform and a covered cargo area or tarpaulin to protect the products from rain.
- When transporting different bead types in the same vehicle, place longer and heavier cartons underneath and shorter and lighter cartons on top.
- Do not place heavy or sharp objects on the cartons. Make sure the cartons are not bent, distorted or punctured during transport.
- Handle cartons correctly during loading and unloading to prevent tearing, bending or deformation.
Storage recommendations for HAN uPVC Finishing Beads:
- Store indoors on pallets in a dry, cool and well-ventilated area. Protect the products from direct sunlight, water, soil, mud, moisture, mould and high temperatures.
- Do not store cartons vertically. Individual beads should not be stored upright or leaning for extended periods, as this may cause them to bend.
- When the products are not in use, clean and repack them in their cartons to protect them from dust and preserve their colour, smoothness and gloss.
- Do not turn cartons upside down. Keep them in the orientation indicated by the arrows printed on the packaging.

In building finishing works, plastering and rendering are among the most important activities affecting the overall quality and appearance of a project.
When plastering and rendering balconies, loggias, box gutters, canopies and lintels, forming drip grooves, termination points and exposed plaster edges requires a high degree of accuracy and professional workmanship to achieve straight, even, precise and visually refined results.
When drip details—traditionally formed as raised mortar profiles—and plaster termination edges are constructed using conventional methods without uPVC Drip Beads, the following problems may occur:
- Conventional raised drip profiles are often rounded, uneven, irregular and insufficiently straight or flat.
- Raised mortar profiles may create bulky, uneven surfaces that are prone to cracking over time, algae growth and dirt accumulation, making them difficult to clean.
- The exposed outer edge accompanying the drip line may be uneven, misaligned, insufficiently flat and lacking in refinement.
- The outer plaster edge and drip detail must be formed separately, increasing installation time and labour costs.
- Installation is slow and difficult when numerous drip details are required, while the achievable finish may be aesthetically limited.

To use HAN uPVC Drip Beads correctly for finishing drip grooves and plaster termination edges, customers should observe the following guidelines:
- Select the appropriate uPVC drip bead profile for the application. Pay particular attention to the profile design and ensure that the width of the drip groove meets the project’s design requirements.
- Select a bead size suitable for the plaster or render thickness. The bead height should be at least 1 mm less than the thickness of the finished plaster layer.
- Choose a suitable colour according to the design and aesthetic requirements. The three standard colours are white, red and grey.
- Level and clean the substrate thoroughly before plastering or rendering. Dampen the surface to improve adhesion. At critical locations, reinforcement mesh may be installed to strengthen the bond and help reduce shrinkage cracking in the plaster layer and at material junctions.
- Prepare suitable scaffolding for work at height. Check its safety and arrange an appropriate installation method to reduce worker fatigue and improve construction efficiency.
- Prepare suitable setting-out and levelling tools. A laser level can accelerate installation by simultaneously aligning multiple vertical and horizontal edges within the same area. For outdoor work, use a laser level specifically designed for outdoor conditions.
- Use a specialized cutting tool to produce clean and accurate joints. Pay particular attention to the cutting technique at 90° intersections to achieve a neat and visually consistent finish.
- Secure the bead firmly using mortar or screws. Do not drive screws through the exposed decorative face of the bead. Ensure that the bead is fully bedded in mortar to prevent hollow spots or voids.
- Remove excess plaster or render promptly and ensure that no mortar remains on the exposed bead surface.
- Remove the protective film at the appropriate time to preserve the quality and appearance of the bead.
- Store unused beads properly in accordance with HAN’s storage instructions.
HAN uPVC Drip Beads are currently available in the following specifications and packaging:
- Dual-function uPVC Drip Bead for forming both a drip groove and an external corner edge: PDL0120S.
- uPVC Drip Beads for forming recessed grooves only: PGU0150, PGV0150, etc. Other HAN uPVC Recessed Joint Beads may also be used where suitable.
The standard length is 2.5 metres per bead, or the beads can be cut to custom lengths upon request.
Packaging: 50–100 beads per carton.
