General Introduction to Ceiling Perimeter Beads and uPVC Shadowline Beads
Finishing beads are construction accessories designed to make finishing works faster, more accurate and visually refined while reducing installation errors. They can be manufactured from various materials, including galvanized steel, stainless steel, uPVC and aluminium.
uPVC finishing beads are engineered uPVC profiles available in various designs for building finishing works, including plastering, rendering, tiling and skim-coat application.
Ceiling perimeter beads are manufactured from materials such as stainless steel, uPVC, aluminium or galvanized steel. They are used in skim-coating and painting works for plasterboard systems to create a recessed architectural detail and conceal cracks at the exposed edges of plasterboard ceilings and partitions.
uPVC Shadowline Beads are manufactured from engineered uPVC with a purpose-designed Z-shaped profile for finishing plasterboard ceilings and partitions. They form a precise perimeter detail around plasterboard surfaces and create an architectural shadow gap at ceiling-to-wall and partition-to-floor junctions.
uPVC Shadowline Beads are also known as Z beads, plasterboard shadow-gap beads, drywall shadowline beads or Z-shaped plasterboard beads.

Functions of uPVC Shadowline Beads
uPVC Shadowline Beads provide the following functions:
- Create a precise architectural perimeter around plasterboard panels, separating the boards from adjoining surfaces and forming a clean, open detail at ceiling and partition edges.
- When installed around a plasterboard ceiling, they form a continuous perimeter line, separate the ceiling from the walls, conceal the ceiling-to-wall junction, help reduce cracking and create a shadow-gap effect that enhances contemporary interiors.
- When installed at the base of a plasterboard partition, they form a continuous perimeter detail, separate the partition from the floor, conceal the junction, help reduce cracking, improve ventilation and make the base easier to clean. They also help reduce capillary moisture from reaching the bottom of the plasterboard partition.
- Improve the quality of plasterboard finishing works by enabling faster, more accurate and visually refined installation while enhancing user safety and reducing maintenance costs.
General Introduction to PVC, uPVC and Engineered uPVC
uPVC Shadowline Beads are manufactured from uPVC, also known as PVC-U. The full name of uPVC is “Unplasticized Polyvinyl Chloride”. It is a rigid form of PVC that contains no plasticizers. This rigidity gives uPVC enhanced mechanical, physical and chemical properties compared with conventional flexible PVC.
HAN develops engineered uPVC from a uPVC base formulation and adds specific mechanical, physical and chemical performance characteristics to suit different construction applications.
HAN uPVC Shadowline Beads are made from engineered uPVC to provide enhanced rigidity, toughness, elasticity, surface gloss, colour stability and chemical resistance, making them suitable for interior and exterior finishing applications.
HAN uPVC Shadowline Beads are safe for installers and building users when used as intended. Their surfaces resist moss accumulation, are easy to clean and help reduce capillary moisture penetration.
The service life of HAN uPVC Shadowline Beads is compatible with that of plasterboard systems under normal ambient and climatic conditions.

Selecting and Using uPVC Shadowline Beads for Plasterboard Ceilings and Partitions
To achieve the best technical, economic and aesthetic results when using uPVC Shadowline Beads for plasterboard ceilings and partitions, customers should consider the following:
| No. | Item | Key considerations | What to avoid |
| 1 | Product code | Identify the correct HAN product code when the construction specification has already been established. | |
| 2 | Design |
Select a design and colour suitable for the application. |
Do not select a lower-cost design without considering installation requirements, performance and finished appearance. |
| 3 | Size | The plasterboard thickness must be compatible with the bead height. The plasterboard thickness must be equal to or greater than the bead height. | |
| 4 | Standard lengths | For small quantities, use HAN’s standard lengths of 2, 2.5 or 3 metres. For high-volume projects, custom-cut lengths can reduce offcuts, material waste and unnecessary costs. | Avoid ordering unsuitable lengths that create excessive offcuts, material waste and additional installation costs. |
| 5 | Quantity | Determine the required quantities and specifications accurately and include a reasonable allowance for cutting waste. | |
| 6 | Order lead time | Make sure the products are available in the site warehouse before installation begins to prevent delays to the construction programme. | Avoid placing orders too close to the installation date, as this may affect the construction schedule. |
| 7 | HAN product identification | Purchase from an authorized distributor or directly from HAN. The packaging should clearly display HAN’s product code, address and telephone number. | Products in packaging that does not clearly display HAN’s factory information may not be genuine HAN products. |
| 8 | Responsible personnel | Personnel with suitable technical knowledge and experience should consult directly with HAN’s technical advisory team before making purchasing decisions. | |
| 9 | Installation method | Follow HAN’s installation instructions: make sure the plasterboard framing is securely positioned and screw heads do not project above the bead surface. A staple gun may also be used where appropriate. Remove excess joint compound from the bead while it is still wet to achieve the best performance and appearance. For product codes supplied with temporary protective film, remove the film at the appropriate time to preserve the finished surface. | |
| 10 | Storage method | Follow the recommended transport and storage procedures to maintain product quality before installation. |

To achieve a high-quality finish, remove the temporary protective film at the appropriate time after installation, cleaning and completion of all related works. This helps protect the bead surface until the finished area is ready for use.
